After PCBA, OpenString is assembled by soldering the PCBs end-to-end and attaching the 3-wire harness. You can solder together as many boards as you like to create a string of any length. The assembly is then packaged for installation by potting in a protective housing.
Assembly Steps
The pages in this section walk through the full assembly workflow:
- Solder Boards: connect PCBs end-to-end and attach the 3-wire harness.
- Prepare Housing: an example housing approach using extruded plastic and 3D-printed end caps.
- Potting: prep the work surface and seal the assembly with marine epoxy.
- Testing & Mount: run a final electrical check and prepare string for installation.
The packaging steps (housing, potting, VHB) necessarily depend on your specific application. We describe the SIMB3 approach as one concrete example. Adapt the materials and method to your own application.
